Benchmarking

Benchmarking, a process used for comparing industry-best examples, is an extremely valuable tool for ideation where inspirational content is gathered for the purpose of generating new ideas. Benchmarking can be applied to everything from new product design to branding to business strategy and beyond.

An Idea doesn't need to be original to be successful. If the similar solution exists anywhere else within or outside the company, the same must be considered for further evaluation. Benchmarking is done with respect to other functions of a company or other companies of the industry, in order to bring the existing best practices across industry to solve the problem. We chose the functions or company, which offers similar solution or deals with similar kind of processes, with no such pain-points highlighted by the users.

There are two types of Benchmarking:

1. Subjective Benchmarking: The comparisons are made based on how the User think, feel, and do about the other solution.

2. Objective Benchmarking: These are data-point comparison between the two solutions.

Analogies

Analogies, help us find inspiration to our design problem's solution in unrelated fields by comparing our problem with their similar problems and how it came to be solved. By scrutinizing the solution and understanding why it worked we can take that knowledge and transfer the solution to solving our current problem.

Analogy is to make a comparison that suggests parallels between two distinct things, explicitly or implicitly. Many of the important breakthroughs in history e.g. the printing press, the theory of evolution, the airplane, the assembly line and the computer desktop, are developed through the use of conceptual analogies.  We use many products on day-to-day basis, the design of which is inspired by something else in different environment. Analogies is the best way of generative creative ideas, and is the widely used approach by Innovative companies.

Some very obvious examples of inventions or creating solutions through Analogies are as follows:

1. Airplane: Birds

2. Submarine: Whale

3. Surgical Needles: Mosquito

4. LED light Bulb: Fire Flies

5. Airplane Black-box: Woodpecker Skull

6. Winter jackets: Polar bear

7. Ergonomically Chairs: Human spine shape

8. Formula car (High Speed car): Cheetah

9. Robotic Arm: Elephants Trunk

10. Construction structure: Honeycomb
